Dress-up, rescue or puzzle — which does your child want?

It helps to know which of the three strands a child is after, because they play very differently. Dress-up and salon titles are open-ended and calm, with no way to fail. Rescue games ask for a little planning — pull the right pin, clear the right block — and reward a second attempt. Puzzle titles are the quietest of the lot: matching, connecting, coloring.

If you are choosing for siblings of different ages, the mini-game packs are usually the safest bet, since they rotate through several types in a single sitting and nobody gets stuck.

Good for a four-year-old?

Roughly ages four to six do best with the dress-up, decorating and coloring titles here. They are tap-and-drag, nothing is on a clock, and any choice can be undone. Nothing on screen has to be read, so once an adult has walked a child through the wardrobe screen once, they can keep going by themselves.

The runners and rescue puzzles fit better from about seven upward, mostly because they need faster reactions or a step of forward planning. Nothing stops a younger child trying them — they simply tend to drift off when a level repeats.
